Audition FAQs
Mock Trial is a competitive, team-based, fake trial. But what exactly does that mean?
01
What would I do on the team?
Team members act as a witness, practice as an attorney, or both. The former requires acting skills (the ability to get the judge’s attention, the ability to toy with hostile attorneys on cross-examination, the ability to convincingly portray a character, the ability to stay in role under high pressure). To participate as an attorney requires more formal public speaking skills; you’ll learn to think on your feet, talk with professionalism and confidence toward opponents, properly present opening statements and closing arguments, and (best of all) how to corner an opposing witness during cross-examination (ex. how to win every argument). While no one is expected to come prepared with all of these tools, you’ll definitely practice with us in learning and polishing them as a member of our team so you can rock tournaments and bring home a team win!
02
What kinds of prerequisites are there?
There are no concrete requirements you need to meet before joining the team. The vast majority of our members never did mock trial in high school and are proud to admit it! Of course, previous experience in mock trial, public speaking, debate, and acting will all help, but nobody is rejected based on lack of experience. We seek thoughtful, analytical people who express serious interest, potential, and a willingness to learn and commit to the team! Whether you are interested in public speaking, acting, the law, or simply finding a great, diverse group of people to hang out with on campus, Brown Mock Trial is definitely for you!
How to Audition
Our audition consists of three parts.
1
Attend an info session
We’ll discuss what college mock trial looks like and give you access to the audition packet, audition form, sign-up times, and other materials.
2
1-2 witness portrayals, memorized
You’ll assume the role of a witness and testify as if you’re in court! We’ll ask you questions both on direct examination (from a friendly attorney) and cross examination (from an opposing attorney). We’ll provide the affidavits (a statement of facts) for four different witnesses, and you’ll have the opportunity to portray either 1 or 2 of them.
3
An improvised 2-minute speech
No need to memorize for this one! We’ll give you the prompt on the day of.
If you have no idea what any of this means, don’t worry!
We’ll share resources and examples in our audition packet.

Audition Steps
1
Attend an info session
We’ll discuss what college mock trial looks like and give you access to the audition packet, audition form, sign-up times, and other materials.
2
Pick an audition slot
Each audition will last around 15-30 minutes. If you can’t make it during the proposed times, please let us know and we will try our best to find another time that will work. You can find our contact information on the third page of this packet. Sign-up times and slots will be sent out after info sessions!
3
Fill out the audition form
When you sign up for an audition time, please fill out our short online form. We promise it’s not too long; we just ask for some background info so that we can get to know you before your audition. We may also use it to ask you a few follow-up questions after your audition.
4
Prepare for your audition
Use the resources in the audition packet to prep your speech and witness portrayal(s)! We’ll also schedule ‘office hours’ to answer questions about the process and give general guidance/tips. (To keep tryouts fair, we won’t give specific feedback on a speech or witness portrayal.)
5
Show up to your audition!
Obviously, the most important part of the audition process is…the audition! Please arrive at least 5 minutes before your scheduled audition time. Email brownmocktrial@gmail.com if you have any questions!
